About Miami-Dade County, Florida
Miami-Dade County is located in southeast Florida, west of the Atlantic Ocean. It was formerly know as Dade County and is also referred to as Metro-Dade and Greater Miami. West of Miami-Dade County are Collier County and Monroe County. It extends into the Everglades National Park.
Dade County was founded in 1836 and included land that is now Palm Beach County, Broward County and Monroe County. It was named after Major Francis Dade, a soldier killed in the Second Seminole War. Miami-Dade County consists of 2,431 square miles of which 1,898 square miles is land and 533 square miles is water. Currently it consists of 43 municipalities.
