About Coconut Creek, Florida
Coconut Creek is located in the most northern part of Broward County. It is west of Deerfield Beach and Pompano Beach. It is east of Parkland, Margate and Coral Springs. It broke away from the city of Pompano Beach in 1960. It consists of approximately 12 square miles, of which 11.9 square miles are land and .2 are water. It is a planned community.
The community is focused on environmental consciousness. The butterfly is its official symbol. It contains an abundance of trees, lushly landscaped roads and parks. It was the first city in the state and the eleventh in the country to become certified as a “Community Wildlife Habitat” by the National Wildlife Foundation. In 2014, it was considered to be one of the “best places to live.” This rating was according to Money Magazine. Money Magazine also ranked it 48th on their list of best places to live in 2010.
Community leaders continue to promote the development of gardens and green spaces. They are especially focused on butterfly friendly gardens and yards. They are working hard to protect the Monarch butterfly. This is a community-wide focus. Coconut Creek is nicknamed the “Butterfly Capital of the World” because it hosts the famous butterfly park called Butterfly World. Butterfly World opened in 1988. It is the largest butterfly aviary in the world. It contains more than 5000 individual butterflies, consisting of 80 different species. It is quite a unique place to visit and a lovely place to live.
