There are everyday heroes everywhere. They walk amongst us and we often don't even notice them. They are the fire-fighters and police officers who risk their lives everyday for our benefit. They are the teachers who invest extra time without pay to assist students in need of extra attention. They are the people who donate time out of a busy schedule to volunteer for charity. They are the people who, without thought, consistently sacrifice in order to do things that benefit our community.
There are other everyday heroes, too. They are the single mothers who work two jobs to support their children. They are the children who stay home after work and on weekends to take care of sick or elderly parents. They are the parents who sacrifice vacations, new cars, etc., to send their children to college. They are the people who sacrifice in less visible ways to do things that benefit others.
If you think about it for a moment, I'm sure you can think of many people you know who are everyday heroes. These people are inspiring. They should be recognized and celebrated.
I have a friend who inspires me constantly, and I doubt she even knows it. She is a single mother who works non-stop to earn enough money to provide for her daughter. She spends time doing housework, laundry, grocery shopping, and cooking, like the rest of us. She also invests some of her time, on occasion, taking classes to improve her skills, so she will be better able to provide for her child in the future. But what inspires me about her even more is that she spends almost all of her remaining time doing things with her child. She drives her to and from school and to after-school and summer activities. She spends time doing crafts with her and teaching her to sew, scrapbook, cook, etc. She takes her to the movies, religious classes, and elsewhere. And, even though she must surely be exhausted from her work and household requirements, she is always willing to do something with her child. She constantly maintains a positive attitude and outlook on life, and is always willing to help a friend or charity. As a result of her continuous devotion and her excellent example, her daughter has learned the same strength of character, giving nature, and positive attitude. My friend and her daughter have been an inspiration to me since the day I met them.
When you see everyday heroes, celebrate them. Do something to recognize their heroism. Write an article for the newspaper recognizing the good deeds they have done. Tell them how much you appreciate what they do and how much they inspire you. Do something to help them if they need it. Do something to show you appreciate and support them.
Celebrating everyday heroes strengthens our country because we need these heroes. They provide many important services to our country and they provide an example for all of us. Celebrating them unifies our country by reminding them that they are not alone. It lets them know that they are an important part of our community and that we treasure them.
